Sew your own linen scrunchie in 5 minutes or less

Sewing your own linen scrunchie is easy and super quick, it only takes about 5 minutes. And it is the perfect project to use up some of your fabric scraps since it only uses up a tiny bit of fabric.

Linen scrunchies are perfect for any season, but their natural and laid-back look is especially suited for the summertime. And since they are so quick and easy to make, you won’t have to miss any beach or gardening time. You can whip one up in 5 minutes or less, and then you will have a beautiful handmade linen scrunchie to keep your hair up while you enjoy the sunshine.

I love using linen for my sewing projects because it looks so lovely and organic. But did you know it is also one of the most sustainable fabrics there are? This is because flax, which is the plant that linen is made off of, is super tough and doesn’t need a lot of water or pesticides to thrive. Unlike cotton, with needs plenty of both and can be very hard on the environment to produce. Combine that with linen’s antibacterial properties and its ability to wick away moisture. And I would ask you, what is not to love about linen?

Choose any colour that you like, you can make them match your hair or eyes. Maybe you want a matching scrunchie for all your outfits this summer. Or just go with a natural undyed linen for that classic look that will go with everything.

Most important of all is to have fun while creating your own unique scrunchie.

Per linen scrunchie, you will need

  • Elastic 17 cm long by 1 cm wide or thinner
  • Linen strip of fabric,
    • 36 cm by 6 cm for a thin scrunchie
    • 36 cm by 8 cm for a medium scrunchie
    • 36 cm by 10 cm for a wide scrunchie
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine (unless you want to sew by hand)
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric scissors
  • Two safety pins
  • Straight pins

Instructions

Use a nice stretchy elastic that is not too wide.

Choose any colour of linen you have available or that you really like. You only need a little bit, so you can definitely go through your fabric scraps if you prefer.

Cut the linen & elastic

For the elastic, measure off and cut 17 cm for your scrunchie.

Measure off and cut 36 cm by 6 cm for a thinner scrunchie, which will give a sleeker look.
Measure off and cut 36 cm by 8 cm for a medium-width scrunchie, if you don’t want anything too narrow or wide.
Measure off and cut 36 cm by 10 cm for a wider scrunchie, which will give a more playful look.

Right sides together

Fold and pin with the right sides facing together.

If you prefer, you can use an iron to press the sides together. But since a scrunchie is so quick to sew up, I tend to skip the pressing on this project.

With the right sides facing together, sew a straight stitch along the long edge. For extra durability, you can use a zig-zag stitch or a serger to finish off the raw edge.

Inside out

To turn your scrunchie tube inside out, you can use a safety pin. Attach the safety pin to one side of your tube, then push it through the inside of your tube, thereby taking one side of the tube along with it. This will turn your linen scrunchie tube right side out.

The elastic

To get the elastic inside your linen tube, you can attach one side of the elastic to one side of the tube with a small safety pin. Then attach another safety pin to the other side of the elastic and guide the safety pin with the elastic on it through the tube.

Now you have the two ends of your elastic sticking out of the two ends of your tube if all went well. You can secure them together with a pin if you like, making sure they overlap a bit.

Then sew across the two ends of elastic with your sewing machine, making sure to go back and forth to make the seam extra secure.

Closing your linen scrunchie

To close your scrunchie, you will want to fold the raw edge of one end inwards, this will hide that raw edge. Then you can use this edge to cover your other end by slipping it over the other end.

Make sure to align the seams before you sew the ends together so that everything will be as neat as can be.

You can either sew the ends together with your sewing machine or by using a ladder stitch. A ladder stitch might take a minute or two longer but the seam will be invisible and therefore also perfect if you don’t have matching thread.

Enjoy your own handmade linen scrunchie

Make a ponytail with your scrunchie or a nice high bun to really show off your handmade linen scrunchie. They are so versatile and ever so gentle on your hair, which makes them the perfect hair accessory in my book.

I hope you had fun with this super quick and easy sewing project. And if you did, I would love it if you would post a picture of your linen scrunchie and tag me on Instagram so that I can admire your creations.
