Homemade popcorn made on your stove top

Popcorn is such a classic snack for when you want to cuddle up on the sofa with the whole family. Whether you like your popcorn sweet, salty or flavoured with different spice blends. If you make your own popcorn from scratch, you will be sure to have a delicious snack for any occasion.

We love making popcorn in our home. Whether it is when we do a Saturday movie night or a Board game Sunday morning. It is such a quick snack to make, and often I make a big batch of popcorn. Then divide everything out over several bowls. So that everyone can add their own favourite flavour combos on top. Especially the younger kids love it when they are allowed to throw the spices onto their own popcorn.

Did you know that you can even make popcorn from sprouted corn to make this healthy snack even healthier. Because whenever we sprout or ferment our grains, we increase the bio-availability of the nutrients inside the grains. Just like when you make a sourdough loaf, you get a more nourishing loaf than when using baker’s yeast. You will get a more nourishing snack when you use sprouted corn kernels over unsprouted corn kernels.

How to make from scratch popcorn

Homemade popcorn is the perfect snack for any time of day. Sprinkle some good quality sea salt on top for a classic snack. Or try out some new delicious flavour combinations for an original twist on this simple snack.

Makes: 1 medium to large bowl
Prep: 1 min
Cooking: 5 min

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
  • 2 tbsp of coconut oil or ghee (olive oil & butter aren’t recommended because of their lower smoke point)
  • good quality sea salt to taste or any other flavouring that you prefer

Preparation:

Heat up your coconut oil or ghee in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan or pot on medium to high heat.

When the coconut oil or ghee is hot, you can add the popcorn kernels in an even layer and cover with a lid.

The kernels should start popping almost immediately. As soon as they start popping, you will want to shake the pan every so often. This way all the kernels will be able to pop properly, and none of them will burn. I like to use either an oven glove or a good potholder for this since the pan can get rather hot.

Once you hear the popping slow down and the pops are more than 5 or 6 seconds apart, your popcorn is ready to be taken off the stove. Although I tend to wait for a second or two when I’ve taken it off of the stove before I open the lid since it has happened to me several times that one last kernel likes to pop and jump right in my face.

Once all your popcorn is done, you can either divide it into several smaller bowls and have everyone add their own spice combination or add it to one large bowl and have a nice big communal bowl of popcorn.

If you like to add some melted butter to your popcorn, you can melt it in your still warm pan and drizzle it over your popcorn. I find that about 10 grams is plenty of butter to cover this amount of popcorn but feel free to add more if you prefer or no butter at all if you prefer butter-free popcorn. Then sprinkle on whatever spices or flavourings you prefer and mix so that it covers all of the popcorn.

What is your favourite popcorn topping?

I would love to know what your favourite topping is on this classic snack. Do you keep it simple with only a sprinkling of sea salt or do you go all out with melted butter and a whole host of spices? Let me know down below in the comments or tag me on Instagram with your favourite flavour combination. Personally, for me, nothing can beat some good browned butter drizzled over my popcorn with a sprinkling of sea salt. It is perhaps a simple topping, but it always hits the spot for me.
