Spring is finally around the corner
Like most, I dream of spring during winter, of the return of lush green grass and yellow daffodils popping up. Pining for birdsong to fill the mornings and the sun to warm my face.
This winter was a dull and gloomy affair there was not much to do with lock-down in place. And one can only walk the same park so many times in winter before it becomes monotonous.
At the start of winter, I love that I can snuggle up in front of the fire with a good cup of tea. But by the time February rolls around, it starts to feel stale. It’s then that I truly start searching for those early signs of life, the grass that starts growing again, and the budding branches. Birds that are becoming more active and the daffodils that are poking up their heads.
I am ready for spring
I’m definitely ready for spring, a few weeks ago I had already ordered some soil and grow bags to grow some plants in. I had been planning my garden for weeks already. I also already started most of my seeds, and some have even already sprouted. Now it is just a matter of waiting till there is no more danger of frost.
The other day it was unseasonably warm and sunny, and we went for an extra long walk that day. Everywhere I looked, I saw flowers budding, and I even saw some brave bees busily gathering nectar from the handful of flowering flowers. It was glorious and filled me with anticipation for the spring and summer.
Beautiful glorious petite little birds
On our walk, we also encountered a plethora of birds. I was in awe of the sheer number of birds and the diversity of the species.
We saw plenty of robins, sparrows, blackbirds, and starlings which are plentiful around here but that makes them no less alluring. There were also quite a number of tits, like the great tit, blue tit, and the long tailed tit of which the last is my favourite since it looks just like a tiny butler.
We even spotted a new bird, of which we hadn’t heard before since we had never seen it in the Netherlands, which was the chaffinch. I love the way it looks, with its red belly and cheeks, with a little grey hood on top and a brown shawl on its back. It almost looks comical, as if it was playing dress-up and couldn’t decide on the outfit.
I would say go outside and enjoy the sunshine and find some birds to gaze at and try to find some budding flowers. Find your springtime signs and revel in the knowledge that spring is just around the corner.
Sunshine is really is the best medicine, it will uplift any weary soul and cure any melancholy.
