My daily routine
Let me tell you about my day to day routine, I will cover my average weekday since weekends tend to be very chaotic. On Saturday mornings my husband and I quickly do what chores need doing and get breakfast ready, while our eldest gets herself ready and takes her sister out of her crib. My husband then gets the baby ready for the day and after breakfast we do something fun with all of us. On Sunday it goes much the same but the breakfast is then more of a brunch, it is a family tradition to have some freshly baked buns with a boiled egg for everyone.
The mornings
Before Corona hit I would wake up at 5 in the morning so that I could make the lunches for that day and kiss my husband goodbye when he went to the office at 6 am. Now that Corona is here I wake up at 6 am since I can just prepare everyone’s lunch at lunchtime, plus my husband doesn’t go into the office these days but works from home. So when I wake up I take a quick shower and get dressed for the day together with my husband, after that he goes to his temporary “office”. I get the house ready for the day, make sure the tables are cleared of the glasses from the night before, the curtains are open, plants are watered and everything is just reasonably tidy. Once that is all sorted I go into the kitchen and prepare our breakfast, this can easily be done on autopilot since it’s always porridge with some fruit on the side. So since this bit is on autopilot I can make a mental to-do list that I write down once breakfast is set. With breakfast ready to go I check on my eldest to see how she’s coming along and if she had a good night’s sleep, then I wake up the baby and get her ready for the day. Some days the girls will both be in the bathroom while I cook the porridge or they will be playing in the living room, when the baby is unusually fussy she will sit on my hip while I cook the porridge.
Once breakfast is over we would walk to school before Corona but now I go through my eldest her school assignments for the day and help her get a start on all of that. Then I take the baby for some play outside so that my eldest can focus on her schoolwork, once the baby is tired of playing outside and we go back inside it’s break time. I prepare some fruit with a biscuit to go along and water or tea for all of us, quite soon after that the baby also gets her lunch which is just a simple slice of some soda bread with marmalade or jam. Once she ate all of that she will take a little nap and my eldest will go back to her school work, while I do some house chores and writing.
The afternoons
The afternoon starts with our lunch, we tend to have a different soup every two days with a slice of buttered soda bread with it. We like to eat our lunch outside if the weather permits, there is just something so relaxing about the wind in your hair and birdsong in the air. After lunch my husband goes back to his impromptu “office” and my eldest finishes up the last bits of her schoolwork, which includes the “momschool” things. Ever since she was about 3 years we’ve done “momschool” which just consists of things I think are important but they don’t teach you at school. At the moment we have piano, knitting and special Irish lessons. Since we only recently moved to Ireland she is behind on Irish and since the school doesn’t offer special lessons for Irish I organized some Irish lessons for her. During the baby her nap I do more house chores and writing since it’s so nice and quiet during that time. I also make sure that before the baby wakes up I have dinner ready to go, so all the veggies and potatoes peeled and chopped, and any meat that is still in the freezer taken out to defrost. That way when dinner time comes around I only have to turn on the hobs of the stove and get the table ready. Once the baby then wakes up from her nap and my husband is done for the day we all go for a nice little walk, we pack some snacks and drinks for underway and just enjoy the outdoors.
The evenings
I consider the start of the evening the moment when I start on dinner, we all sit down and enjoy our meal. Most days the girls will have some sort of biscuit or cracker as dessert, my husband and I aren’t really the dessert kinda people so we skip dessert. After that my eldest does the dinner dishes while she can watch any show she likes, that way she actually asks me if she can do the dishes and I don’t have to tell her to do them. My husband and I get the baby ready for bed, I nurse her for a little bit while he reads to us, since she doesn’t mind what story we read we tend to just read aloud whatever book we are reading at that time. Once she is asleep, my eldest tends to also be done with the dishes and gets herself ready for bed as well. And my husband and I get to actually spend some time alone together, depending on the day either my husband or I will have a game night with some friends, we watch a film together or possibly my favourite evening activity he reads to me while I knit. It sort of feels like my own private audiobook, it feels kind of romantic just the two of us on the sofa especially when we have a nice warming cup of tea.
I hope you have a good idea of my typical day now and I would love to know what your typical day looks like, if you would let me know in the comments. Is your day similar or completely different, are all your days mostly the same or very different?
